I sit here in the classroom, but my mind is thousands of miles away.
I think of my family halfway across the globe. In my homeland of Colombia, I have many cherished memories of my childhood. I think of the vibrant, lively streets of Cartagena and the warm sunlight that always greeted us in the mornings. I remember the days I spent walking along the shore with my siblings, listening to the rhythmic sound of the ocean waves. It’s here that my love of the sea was born.
My family’s journey to the United States was difficult, but it was full of hope. We traded our bustling city life in Cartagena for a quiet suburban one in Miami. Every day, I’m thankful for the opportunity to pursue a brighter future.
Now, I’m a college student, and I’m determined to make the most of it. I apply the same values that were instilled in me as a kid—hard work, courage, and resilience—to all that I do. I strive for excellence and never give up when faced with a seemingly insurmountable challenge. My immigrant parents taught me that nothing is impossible when you persevere.
So, I continue to move forward, no matter the obstacles. I find solace in my heritage and my culture, and use it as a basis for my academic and professional pursuits. I use everything I have learned and experienced to reach for a higher goal.
I have come a long way, and I have much further to go. But I am grateful for how far I have come and the bravery of my ancestors who put my feet on this journey. Despite the distance, Colombia is always in my heart.
